Meaningful Music of the 21st Century

Sheerios, that’s the name given to fans of Ed Sheeran, one of the greatest pop stars of the 21st century. Even music icon Elton John is a Sheerio, singing a duet together at the 2013 Grammy Awards. His full name is Edward Christopher Sheeran, born 17th February 1991. He was born in Halifax, England but was brought up in the beautiful market town Framlingham in Suffolk, England. What makes him stand out from the rest? His soulful music that relates to everyone and his knowing that he will never have a six pack and that fact does not bother him at all.

Ed Sheeran is a songwriter for himself as well as other famous artists such as Justin Bieber, boy band One Direction and Tori Kelly. Some songs tell of his real-life encounters, experiences and relationships:

  • “Small Bump” was a true story based on the perspective of his friend who had a miscarriage at 5 months
  • “The A Team” which he co-sang with Elton John at the Grammy’s was based on the true story of a drug-addicted, homeless women he met at a shelter and the video cost £20 to film
  • “You Need Me, I Don’t Need You” was written as a defiance to his former management company who wanted to change his image
  • “Castle on a Hill” was about his hometown
  • “Supermarket Flower” was based on his mom’s perspective when she lost her mother
  • “Afire Love” was written about his grandfather’s struggle with Alzheimer’s disease which he finished writing at his grandfather’s funeral
  • “Nancy Mulligan” was based on his grandfather’s perspective of his Romeo-Juliet romance with his wife who was Irish Catholic while he was an Irish Protestant
  • “Nina” was inspired by his former romance in 2012 with Scottish singer-songwriter, Nina Nesbitt who also appeared in his video for the song “Drunk”
  • “Don’t” is rumored to have been written as a direct message to ex-girlfriend Ellie Goulding
  • “The Man” is a personal story he wrote in an attempt to convince himself that he moved on from discovering a devastating betrayal in a past love relationship
  • “Thinking Out Loud” was inspired during his relationship with former girlfriend AthinaAndrelos in 2014

In 2015, Ed Sheeran started dating his childhood friend and sweetheart, Cherry Seaborn who he proposed to in 2017. Several of his songs were inspired by the relationship from as far back as their early childhood memories. The songs are:

His music life started at the age of 4 years old when he sang for the choir at his church. His father is an art historian, his mom designs jeweler and his brother is a composer of classical music. Ed Sheeran started playing the guitar at a young age and released an extended play (EP) record when he was 14 years old. In 2008, when he was 16 years old, he moved to London, and by 2009, he had performed in over 300 live shows. Amidst his success, he is a philanthropist, actively seeking help for street sex workers.
